Community Projects

It is the chapter’s goal to serve our community, especially Veterans during Heroes week. Below are highlights of previous outreach events.

Special Olympics

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports, training, and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families and other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

ASMC members volunteer at the Madison County Special Olympics Track and Field Event in various roles such as escorts for the athletes, timers, measurers are coordinated, organized, and managed by the Special Olympics Track and Event Committee. This committee is the foundation for a successful event and includes members from the participant school systems and volunteers from many professional walks of life.

Heroes Week

Wounded warriors from across the country are brought to North Alabama for a “Welcome Home,” which many never received due to their injuries.  This event allows the local community to appreciate and recognize these service members, spouses, and caregivers.

Service members are honored at a Veterans’ Day breakfast and parade, Marine Corps Birthday celebration, fishing tournament, yacht cruises on Lake Guntersville, aerial tours of north Alabama by private pilots, and numerous lunches and dinners hosted by local organizations and businesses.  ASMC supports this event by operating the information desk providing schedule and other logistical information to Heroes Week participants throughout the week.

Salvation Army Angel Tree

The Angel Tree program involves the community in sharing with those less fortunate in our community.  The program acts as a link for donors to provide gifts of new clothing and toys to thousands of children, disabled or special needs, who otherwise might not have anything for Christmas.  Recipient (Angels) wish lists are placed at Angel Tree locations for adoption from families within the community.  ASMC supports this event by operating the Angel Tree booth to assist donors with the process of adopting angels and collecting the donated items.

Stand Down Together Huntsville

ASMC Chapter members volunteer and assist veteran’s organizations like Stand Down Together Huntsville. Members can collect, donate, and volunteer time for the noble organization.

The members of “ Stand Down Together Huntsville” want to continue what had begun in San Diego during the spring of 1988. It is estimated that more than 100,000 homeless veterans have received assistance at Stand Downs. It will give our homeless veterans some time to rest and recover from day-to-day living on the streets, alleys, under bridges, in cars, or wherever they can find shelter.

Stand Down Together Huntsville will require a great deal of support from our community. If your organization would like to participate in this worthy cause, please get in touch with us. We need volunteers, men’s clothing, new or slightly used men’s pants, and money assistance (tax-deductible).
